We have all heard of ‘bad’, unethical or immoral business practices. The FLOW documentary outlines a number of unethical business practices in relation to water. Business Ethics provides some tools (moral frames) for explaining what makes certain business behaviours unethical, which can assist in ethical decision-making. The Khmer Rouge vs the Lon Nol Government free essay sample

Of the many unjust horrors born of the 20th Century, from the jungles of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge regime claims absolute victory. It is the practice of Western nations to use the three stage theory of the Italian philosopher, Thomas Aquinas, to determine whether a war is morally justifiable. The Khmer Rouge rebellion against the Lon Nol government from 1970-1975 was fuelled partially by the just desire of a people to achieve freedom from a tyrannical leader. However, the tactics employed by the Khmer Rouge and the darker aims of its leaders resulted in arguably the worst human tragedy in recorded history. To determine whether the rebellion was ethically permissible, a range of primary and secondary sources will be analysed. The complex political background behind the uprising of the Khmer Rouge (KR) played a key role in the events of the 1970’s. Before the civil war broke out, the reigning monarch of Cambodia, Prince Sihanouk, introduced expansive improvements to the education systems in what would soon become Democratic Kampuchea (Dunlop, 2005, p. The schools, though in theory beneficial for the country, resulted in high numbers of unemployment among the educated. This, coupled with high taxation on farmers and the banning of rice sales to the Vietnamese Army, resulted in wide spread civil unrest (Dunlop, 2005, p. 59). Primary evidence of the student support for the KR regime can be seen in comment of Phal, an ex-Khmer Rouge military commander: We students could meet as we liked†¦it was the senior students who recruited the younger ones. [To us], communism meant the hope of a better and more just society. †¦The old people; they would tell us stories of how they had been oppressed. cited in Short, 2004 p. 154] It is agreed upon by multiple historians that when military General Lon Nol sent Prince Sihanouk into forced retirement in 1970 he initiated a reign of terror that would divide Cambodian society into two: the communist supporters of the Khmer Rouge and the conservative followers of Lon Nol. This state of absolut e division proved the breaking point for peace in Cambodia and civil war was officially declared (A World to Win 2010; Dunlop, 2004; Short, 2005). The Khmer Rouge rebellion began with the spreading of a just notion for freedom from oppression. According to internet philosopher, Alexander Moseley, to fulfill Thomas Aquinas’s first criterion for a just war (Jus ad Bellum) the belligerent must have a just cause and be prepared to use only the force that is necessary to win (2012). Notable historian, Philip Short (2004, p. 33), states throughout his book â€Å"Pol Pot: History of a Nightmare† that the initial intention of the KR was to free the village peasants, who claimed to make up the majority of the Cambodian population, from the gambles of the then government and to recreate the glory of the ancient Angkorian empire that ruled Cambodia in the 13th Century (2004, p. 33). In riveting primary evidence Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot claimed â€Å"If our people can make Angkor Wat†¦ they can make anything† (cited in Short, 2004, P. 293). Phillip Short adds to Pol Pot’s statement by providing his own, secondary opinion, â€Å"The[re] goal was no to imitate the past but to improve it†. An example of the mistreatment suffered by the Cambodian people is outlined in Irish photographer Nic Dunlop’s (2005, p. 71) book, â€Å"The Lost Executioner†. It describes the 1969 Operation Breakfast which involved the carpet bombing of rural areas in Cambodia by the US military that devastated the lives of thousands of Cambodian civilians. The bombing was carried out in a failed attempt by the USA to disrupt the southern part of the Ho Chi Minh supply trail used by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War that raged simultaneously to supply the Cambodian civil war (Dunlop, 2005 p. 70). The cruelty of the controlling parties at the time was, in part, responsible for providing the inspiration for the Cambodian peasantry to take up arms against the government. So intense was the hatred towards the authoritarian powers of Cambodia that the first skirmish of the war, as historians Short and Dunlop agree, was conducted independently of KR influence (2004, 2005). According to Short (2004, p. 74), the aims of the KR were so popular amongst the peasant population that by the end of 1968 the ranks of the Khmer Rouge had swollen to more more than 10 000 volunteers. Arn Yan, a child of Cambodia’s revolution describes his families joy at the Khmer rouge’s rise to power â€Å"Everybody was extremely happy to get the new gover nment† (Pran, 1997, P. 135). The Khmer Rouge rebellion did have a just intention for challenging to the Lon Nol Government. The battles between the armies of the Khmer Rouge and the Lon Nol administration featured tactics of immeasurable barbarism which greatly outweighed the virtues each side wished to promote. The second criterion of a just war refers to the tactics and strategies utilized throughout the conflict. According to Moseley (2012), the key factors of justice during war (Jus in Bello) is the preservation of civilian neutrality and the proportionality of the military force used against that of the force needed to defeat the enemy. Short (2004 p. 174) claims that the military approach of the KR was through guerilla warfare, which included but was not exclusive to continuous hit and run operations. The callous method of civilian executions and the systematic collection of victims’ heads that was introduced in retaliation to the attacks from the Khmer Rouge by the Lon Nol administration was matched only by the later actions of the Khmer Rouge. The rules of war in South East Asia are unlike the ideology based regulations prevalent in the Western world. Asian war tactics are the product of logic. When questioned on what was acceptable in war, an ex-Khmer Rouge Special Forces soldier replied in startlingly frank primary evidence: If we caught a government soldier, we killed him. There wasn’t any explicit guideline to that effect†¦It was a struggle without pity. We had to draw a clear line of demarcation between the enemy and ourselves. That was the guiding principal. [ cited in Short, 2004 p. 191] Keeping in agreement with the pitiless nature of the war, the Khmer Rouge surpassed all previous atrocities with the use of civilian women and children as human shields (Short, 2004 p. 209). Phillip Short (2004, p. 209) describes government soldiers’ lack of reaction to the civilians and the subsequent open fire of machine guns on unarmed innocents. The use of guerilla warfare practiced by the Khmer Rouge did secure victory; however, the dirty and unjust tactics used set poor precedent for the events that occurred as a result of the war. The aftermath of the Cambodian civil war gave way to unjustifiable savagery amongst the victorious Khmer Rouge. Moseley (2012) describes the final criterion for a just war (Jus Post Bellum) as the end to the suffering inflicted by war and the commencement of peace (2012). The 1999 internet journal, A World to Win, describes the policies of the Khmer Rouge after their victory against the government. The paper, entitled What Went Wrong With the Pol Pot Regime, describes the evacuations of cities in which urban dwellers, or â€Å"New People† as they became known, were forcibly removed from the city and terrorized into becoming slaves on large rice paddies that spanned the country. Child survivor, Loung Ung (2000, Pg. 82), said that starvation and malnutrition amongst the new people often resulted in reports of people, making nutritional use of the surplus of decaying corpses, reverting to cannibalism. Ung (2000, Pg. 82) also mentions the execution of people who hoarded food, or were not efficient workers. Ung (2000 Pg. 6) mentions, in her autobiography, that the cruel conditions imposed on the new people were rarely applied to the original peasants, who were considered pure of Western corruption. Moly Ly, a child of Cambodia’s killing fields provides primary corroboration to Ung’s accusations of the heartless conditions faced by the Cambodian people. Ly states : Every day we were starving yet forced to work harder†¦Some people who were accused of being lazy were brutally executed simply because they were physically unable to work†¦ some people were so hungry that they dug up dead bodies and fried it [Cited, Pran, 1997, p. 9] It is mentioned by A World to Win (1999) that, after the victory of the KR, senior members of the Angkar, the organization, became paranoid about possible corruption within the senior ranks of the leaders (1999). An excerpt of a KR report on the issue offers primary confirmation of the underlying distrust amongst the leaders: [Hidden] enemies seek to deprive the people of food, while following our orders to some extent. These people exist in the army. They look like people conforming with the law. They take our circular instructions and use them to mistreat people and to deprive them, forcing them to work whether they are sick of healthy [cited in A World to Win, 1999] Dunlop (2004) describes that the KR’s solution to the corruption was the introduction of prisons for political enemies, such as Tuol Sleng; infamous for barbaric psychological and physical torture, with fewer than twenty survivors of the 20 000 people imprisoned. The comment from the report reflects the hamartia of the KR regime that lurked within the ideas, otherwise genius in nature. The flaw is best described by ancient Greek philosopher, Thucydides: â€Å"It is frequently a misfortune to have very brilliant men in charge of affairs. They expect too much of ordinary men. † (Brainy Quote, 2001) The timeless nature of the imperfection within the Khmer Rouge regime that ultimately led to the decline of justice in throughout their stint in power is symbolic of the universal lack of foresight championed by the human race. The lack of humanity and justice within the conquering Khmer Rouge followed the pattern of the profane tactics used throughout the civil war. The Khmer Rouge’s stint in power greatly contributed to the ongoing civil insecurity. Since the Cambodian liberation by the Viet Cong the former Democratic Kampuchea remains a shadow of its former self: with unexploded bombs littering the rice paddies giving Cambodia the highest amputee and child mortality rates in the world as of 1999 (A World to Win 1999). The greatest supporters of the rebellion remain largely unaffected by their previous actions, with many holding well paid government positions. The legacy of the Khmer Rouge’s fleeting power is still resonating well into the 21st Century. The righteous initial aims of the Khmer Rouge were insufficient justification for the moral turpitude of the Cambodian civil war. Cambodia’s subsequent spiral into anarchy is reflective of the need for meticulous precision in the planning and organization in the build-up stages of war. The human tragedy of Cambodia must be remembered to ensure that the same mistakes are never repeated. But for little girls growing up they may feel like they want to look like Barbie. Barbie is very skinny and has a great face. So little girls may stop eating or doing other things, so they could look like Barbie. But it wont happen, Barbie is a doll. People are real not Barbie dolls. In the poem it shows how the lady wants to be pretty. So the lady takes short cuts to make her self look better to her self. Such as being in a candle lit rooms. But when the lady is in a regular lit room she becomes ugly to her self again. How to Make the Most of your Study AbroadExperience Part 2 of   Another Kind of Green:  15 helpful tips  from our editorial intern on how  to prepare for and make the most of your time studying abroad. Once in a while when its good, itll feel like it should.   In John Mayers Song Stop this Train, Mayer compares life to a train thats moving too fast, wanting it to stop.   He acknowledges that every now and again there comes a time when everythings grooving.   If you tuned into my previous post, part 1 of Another Kind of Green, then you already know that while studying abroad everything feels like it should.   The experience is extremely amazing and provides great value to college students.   It is the most rewarding, gratifying, adventurous, and beneficial educational step Ive ever taken in my life.   Studying abroad requires careful planning before and during the trip.   Taking the right steps to prepare for studying abroad will ease your transition   and reduce the culture shock of integrating into a new environment and culture.   It can also ensure a good fit between yourself and the educational institution, and even more importantly the country.   By keeping in mind the following tips for the  before  and  during parts of your journey, you will be able to maximize your experience and keep on riding that train. Before 1. Research.  The fun kind.   Where do you want to go?   Talk to your friends, family, and school counselors.   Read peoples reviews of their past trips and experiences.   Think about your goals.   Are you comfortable with change and desire a completely new experience (think Moscow, Prague, Thailand)?   Or would you rather stay in a somewhat familiar environment with people speaking a language you understand (think Dublin, London, or Australia).   Picture yourself in that country as best you can and try to imagine if you have a smile on your face or not.   Go with your gut.   I chose to study in Rome because of its blend of history and modernity and because I am 50% Italian. 2. Research.  Still fun. Consider a study abroad program that will simplify the entire process for you.   They can provide access to housing, application to schools, the sending of transcripts, reviewing of the necessary documents before you go.   They have a wealth of knowledge and resources that you can tap into, and is also beneficial from an emergency and safety standpoint.   Being a part of a study abroad program also means you will instantly be a part of a solid base of other students who are just like you.   They are a little more expensive than going on your own, however.   I ended up choosing the SAI program because of the convenient services they provided. 3. Research. A  little less fun. If you are not going to be a part of a study abroad program, find a university that fulfills your needs.   Do you need course credit?   Will your grades transfer to your home university GPA?   These things matter.   Check with your school to see if they have a study abroad program or connection with schools abroad.   I ended up electing to NOT study abroad through the UC program offered by my school, and went to a school my study abroad program recommended.   I took fun elective classes such as web design and entrepreneurship because I didnt need to fulfill any requirements. 4. Budget.  This will affect your entire trip.   First of all, you need to save a considerable amount of money to pay for your airfare, education, housing, food, activities, trips, etc.   Ive witnessed people who didnt save enough and couldnt go on any trips, go out at night, or eat more than one meal a day because they ran out of money.   Second, find a way that you will obtain  the local currency when you are abroad.   Flexible debit cards that allow you to withdraw from a number of ATMs with little or no withdrawal fees are perfect for taking with you.   Keep in mind also that many credit cards have a surcharge fee for all purchases outside of the US.   I brought over a considerable amount of Euros with me, and only had to make a couple of ATM withdrawals once in Italy.   I also used an American Express to avoid any surcharges when paying with card (which is accepted less in Europe). 5. Get the paperwork over with.   Fill out any and all forms required for your trip.   Do this way in advance so you are not stressed near your departure.   Passports can take a long time to come in the mail, and the same with receiving your student VISA. 6. Pack appropriately.  And smartly.   Dont bring bathing suits and tank tops if youre going to a cold place.   You dont want your attire to scream HEY, IM AMERICAN! either.   That can be a good way to attract   pickpocketers and other troublemakers.   Pack items that are flexible and match well with several other items.   I recommend packing extra towels and DONT recommend packing items you think you will only wear once or twice.   Make sure to stock up on any prescriptions or favorite grooming products, as you will likely not find these wherever youre going.   I made several trips to the mall to purchase nicer clothes to try to match the fashionable Italians. 7. Stay linked to home.  Set up a way to keep in contact with friends and family from home.   Facebook and iMessage are the most convenient ways of doing this.   Bringing an iPhone or other wi-fi capable device will provide you access to any wireless network even if you dont have cell or data service.   A simple international phone that has calling and texting is useful for emergencies and calling people when you really need to.   You can save on expensive rates by using apps such as Viber, WhatsApp, and Tango for free calls and texts. 9. Learn the language.   This obviously only applies to those going to a non-English speaking country.   Having a little knowledge of the language and learning a few key words can really help you out and lower your stress level once you arrive, and its also a cool trait to have that your friends will value.   Rosetta Stone is a great option for tackling the basics of a language before you depart.   I bought the first level of Italian and pretty much completed it, and found it really gave me a head start on everyone in learning some useful and common expressions.   Also, I recommend using Google Maps and the street view feature to become accustomed with a couple streets around your school and housing.   Once youre there, youll recognize key landmarks and decrease your chance of being lost (also is another good trait to have that friends value). 10. Be open to new things.   Your study abroad experience largely depends on your mindset.   Go in with an open attitude and the will to experience new things. During 1. Get comfortable.   For the first couple weeks, just become comfortable with yourself in your new atmosphere.   Be yourself and make friends naturally.   Its okay if these friends mostly are Americansyou can eventually integrate yourself further into the culture and make friends with the natives.   I highly recommend branching out though at some point.   You will surely have the most fun and learn the most about the culture, food, and fun places from native students.   The last third of my trip I really started hanging out with Italians, and it totally changed my experience for the better. 4. Research, again.  Now that youre there, youll start to hear people talk about all the places they want to visit on the weekends.   I recommend planning these trips early.   The advantage to this is that it reduces your stress and helps you save on airfare.   The disadvantage is that its not obvious yet who you want to go on these trips with.   The best way to find cheap flights is skyscanner.net.   Dont use the round-trip option.   You can sometimes find better deals if you get two one-way flights.   Also, coming back early Monday morning (6:00am) before class is often the cheapest option.   Youll end up sleeping at the airport, but saving a bunch of money.   I still remember the four of five early mornings sleeping sprawled out across the terminal floor.   The app TripIt is a great tool to use to organize your trip information. As far as places to go, try to visit a wide variety of destinations.   Coastal trips are attractive, but mix in some that have a different feel as well.   My favorite trips were Ireland and Switzerland. 5. Relax, and enjoy.   This is your time and you can do what you want with it.   Take care of your studies, but really explore this new home and live it to the fullest.   It will be over in the blink of an eye and youll say I cant believe I just spent four months here.   I stopped making to-do lists and really tried to be as free as possible.   Be adventurous and try things you havent before.   Get comfortable, but not too comfortable.   You want to feel at home, but you should also continue to discover new things.   I had a great time and found some beautiful sights just walking around the streets of Trastevere on my own after class. Living without space can prove to be claustrophobic and so it blew up into a war. These raids totally pulverized Afghanistan further. All the arterial roads were closed and with winter setting in, it was difficult for people to get food. Though food packets were air dropped, people were in constant fear of being blown up by land mines. In the past twenty years wars between Soviet Union and America have given rise to a group of maimed and disfigured people mostly in their forties. Young orphans stripped of their innocence strutted around with guns in their hands. These were young hands that never held teddies. Young men beat and raped women without any feelings of guilt. Now North alliance – Taliban’s enemy is trying to gain supremacy over Kabul and faced with complete defeat and soldiers were switching sides. Are these acts of communal violence justified? There is no excuse. These acts cannot be justified even if it is in retribution. The international coalition against terror is a group of rich countries that hold weapons of mass destruction – Chemical, Biological and Nuclear. Most wars have been fought by these countries. They have upheld violence and war. They have supported dictators. Arundhathi Roy is an intense writer. Her detailed descriptions of war makes you sit up and think. She speaks of these acts of violence from a social and cultural perspective. What is this war all about? Is it about establishing peace? Peace at what cost? Can peace be achieved with more violence and fighting? It only leads to communal violence and hatred. This communal violence is a result of misinterpretation of Religion and the real issue gets sidelined. Can’t these terrorist attacks be detected before it happens? With all the high tech gadgets and the intelligence on the job it is impossible to track each and every email, every phone call, letter or plan. During wars; fear, suspicion and rumors terrify people. News of death and violence create panic; leading to more acts of violence. Ultimately it leads to monoculture and dictatorship. Use of religion to gain power is dangerous. The US air dropped food like rice which could not be cooked without fire. Was The US Government attempting to use this misery to boost its image? Information Policies in Organizations

The information age has brought about rapid changes to the ways in which businesses conduct day to day operations. Although this move to electronic commerce has resulted in extraordinary advantages in terms of speed and cost-effectiveness of business, it also presents new challenges in the workplace. The information that is available to everyone on the internet, and more particularly to individuals within an organization is far greater now than it was just a few years ago. Despite the obvious advantages of this forward movement of technology, it creates a severe problem with control of information. Whereas organizational information in the past would typically follow a formal chain of command or an informal office communication network, it can now be passed around the world in milliseconds over the internet. Implementing and maintaining a set of checks and balances to ensure that e-mail and other means of electronic communication are used only in an acceptable manner can prove to be a difficult, time-consuming and costly endeavor. Therefore it is critical for any organization to establish policies and procedures for dealing with these problems in order to ensure the company is not faced with a liability problem for the distribution of indecent, harassing or protected information. A good starting point for an organization to try to minimize exposure to these sort of problems is by defining what is and what is not acceptable use of e-mail and other office communication systems. Policies and procedures can then be developed around this definition. Acceptable use is defined as the use of e-mail and other company information systems for business purposes. The policies and procedures regarding acceptable use must be in writing and be communicated to all the employees of the organization. A written policy should include some of the following the key elements which are necessary for a typical organization entering the information age. Define what is and is not appropriate use of company communication systems. This definition must be congruent with other company policies. For example, it should outline what is considered to be offensive or harassing material and the policy should clearly state that the company lines of communication are not to be used to distribute this sort of material. Furthermore, this definition should be all-inclusive in that it must cover all types of potential problems; from discrimination, to individuals personal information rights. The reason this is so critical is because this definition will form the framework of the company's information policy and will therefore be the critical legal element which stands to prevent these potential problems and serves to protect the company from liability should problems occur regardless of existing policies. In order to protect the company further from exposure to legal action, the formal policy must also include the procedure that employees can follow should their rights be infringed upon. Not only should victims of e-mail harassment or discrimination be encouraged to come forward and report the problem, they must also be assured that the company will not let such action affect the employee in any negative way. Otherwise the organization is leaving themselves open to allegations of covering up or failing to follow through on employee complaints. The policy must state that such reports will be kept in the strictest confidence and that victim is free to report an incident to someone other than their direct supervisor if necessary. Generating the confidence necessary for someone to come forward with allegations of harassment involving misuse of company information systems can be improved by clearly stating in the company policy that each complaint will be investigated thoroughly. Although the previous policies may foster openness with regard to reporting problems in the organization, they do not do a great deal to prevent the problem. Therefore it is crucial that the policy state the legal implications for everyone involved in such an incident. This portion of the policy should state that victims will be free from retaliatory actions from management and other employees and that those responsible for investigation will keep all information as confident as possible and conduct the investigation as objectively as possible. Most importantly however, the consequences for those who are guilty of causing the problems must be clearly outlined. Prompt and decisive disciplinary action should be administered as soon as anyone in the company is found guilty of wrongdoing. It would be foolish for management to expect that such a policy would exempt the organization from minor complaints or even large scale law suits resulting from information systems misuse. It is necessary for organizations to educate their employees on the proper use company communication systems and it is best to do this at the initial orientation phase of an employees career. Since most companies hire on a continual basis, it would be tedious to train new employees using a standard lecture method. The use of programmed instruction and computer based training can help to alleviate this problem through the use of pre-programmed software specific to the companies needs. This sort of training would save time by introducing new employees to standard procedures such as logging on and conducting daily communications. Computer based training can also make reference to company policy and procedure including rights of victims and consequences of those guilty of misuse. A self-administered computer based training program can be developed using standard office applications such as Microsoft Office and can be generated by a knowledgeable user in just a few days. This type of training program must be supplemented by a hardcopy of standard rules and procedures for use of company e-mail and also include a copy of the company's policy as previously outlined. Each new employee would be required to complete the self-administered training program and to sign a copy of the company's polices and procedures before receiving e-mail authorization. Once in place, this programmed instruction can be further modified to include guidelines for storing classified documents and messages. Certain information that is passed through company information lines is not intended to go outside of the organization and it is important for management to make sure all employees are aware that they are responsible for protecting company information. Computer based training can also teach new employees how to manage their e-mail files so that important messages are stored in a received file in which only that employee can access with their personal password. It is very difficult to ensure all employees follow e-mail polices and procedures, particularly if the company's computers have internet access and can sent e-mail to outside organizations from within the company. Periodically reminding staff about the sensitive nature of company information and frequent changing of passwords can help to prevent distribution of important information to those with no need or right to the information. In the case of highly sensitive documents, it is possible to arrange communication networks so that the important documents or data can only be accessed on certain computer terminals. This will allow the company to install firewalls, which can be useful for guarding the integrity of the information.

Gambling is something that people are capable of enjoying once in a while, but for others it can turn into an activity that is hard to control. Gambling is the act of risking money, property, or something of value on an activity that has an uncertain outcome. This can include, lotteries and bingos, card games, going to casinos, buying multiple kinds of tickets, making bets, and games such as pool, golf, or arm wrestling. Gambling can be legal as well as illegal, any sort of gambling managed by the government or by regulations set by the government is legal, and any sort of gambling that is not managed by regulations is illegal. Gambling doesn’t have one specific cause, and the cause can be different for everyone. People who have bipolar disorder, Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome have been observed to develop an addiction to gambling. Bipolar disorder because exorbitant spending is known to be a symptom and can take form in gambling. Parkinson’s and restless leg syndrome, because of the theory that the medications can increase the activity of dopamine in the brain as a culprit. Other causes can include, emotional conditions, schizophrenia, mood problems, antisocial personality disorder, and alcohol or drug addictions. People who have problems with gambling usually spend a lot of time doing so and don’t leave much time for family, friends, and important events. Bigger bets begin to get placed and they happen more often, which can lead to growing debts causing the person to borrow money from friends or family. Those with problems can’t fully stop gambling but would rather â€Å"cut back,† and can also become bad-tempered, depressed, withdrawn, or restless if they aren’t able to gamble. Gambling can have some very serious effects on the gambler, as well as those around him/her. Debt, bankruptcy, poverty, theft, prostitution, and suicide issues can all be side effects of gambling. Families with people those who have an addiction to gambling are more at risk of experiencing domestic violence and child abuse. And children of compulsive gamblers have a higher chance of developing depression, behavior problems, and substance abuse. There are many reasons for gambling and usually it is for fun or excitement, to escape or forget problems, to win money, or to feel challenged. In Canada, gaming is the largest  entertainment industry being the same size as movies, TV, recorded music, and professional sports combined. During 2007, 70.7% of adults gamble, and the most common gaming activities among Canadian adults are lotteries and instant-win tickets. About 3.2& of adults, and 2.2% of youth, are affected by moderate to severe problem gambling. A survey conducted in 2001-2006 suggests that the provinces, which have the highest rates of gambling, are Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and Quebec and New Brunswick have the lowest. Gambling can be overcome, as there are multiple ways to fix your problem. Many participate in gamblers anonymous or go to psychotherapy. Medications have been discovered which help reduce the urge to gamble, or thrill that comes with it. Financial counseling and self-help interventions are also ways to go about fixing your addiction. 70% of people who have gambling problems most likely also have another psychiatric issue; therefore they may need more than one type of treatment for their best chance to overcome their problem(s). My personal viewpoint on gambling is that, it’s not always a bad thing if you can keep it under control, and if it is legal. I think it’s a good way to have fun if you know your limits. If you have gambling problems it can become quite serious, which in that case you need to get some sort of help and realize it is not the best lifestyle. After doing this report I realize that it is an important issue that I was not fully aware of, and that it can be harmful to ones present and future just as much as alcohol and drug addictions. Through events and journeys, Hagar is able to release herself from the restrictions that have prevented her from leading a satisfactory life. Thus, to reconcile with herself and her fate, Hagar must flee from three domestic confinements: her father, her husband and her eldest son. As a child, Hagar was hampered by the pride, social standards and disciplines of her father, Jason Currie. Hagar's life had been dominated by the authority of her father and that is what drove her away from him. Jason Currie was a very proud, self-made man who pushed his values on his children. It is easily seen that many of the father's traits belong, also, to his daughter, such as his pride and stubbornness. Hagar is often closely compared to the stone angel that stands over her mother's grave, doubly blind. It is for this reason that Hagar lived a joyless life for which she was unable to express herself. Jason Currie was excessively caught up in his own dynasty, his image, and was determined to have his children uphold this image. He wanted his children, especially Hagar, to display his pride and behave at the level of his standards. Hager's emotional reactions and superficial outlook were determined by the views expressed by her father's examples and reinforced by punishment. With a father who will tolerate no weakness of any kind, Hagar learned how not to express any emotions. Such as when Hagar says "Oh, look! The funniest wee things, scampering" (Pg.9) while looking at the sultanas, her father's commodities. This was an insult to her father's reputation and pride and makes it known through punishment. However, no matter how much he strikes her hands she refuses to cry. It is at this point that the reader sees how much like her father she really is.

The Management of health and safety at work regulations make the assessment of risks a cornerstone of UK health and safety requirements. Duties statute law imposes on both the manager and the team and the managers responsibilities contained within the organisations health and safety policy. The most important responsibility as an employee is to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and if possible avoid wearing jewelry and tie hair back when using the machines. To take reasonable care not to put other people , fellow employees and members of the public at risk by what you do or don’t do in the course of your work. You should co-operate with your employer, making sure you get proper training and you understand and follow the company’s health and safety policies. An employee should never interfere with or misuse anything that’s been provided for your health, safety or welfare. It is your duty to report any injuries, strains or illnesses you suffer as a result of doing your job. You should always tell your employer if something happens that might affect your ability to work eg becoming pregnant or suffering an injury. All employers must make the workplace safe and prevent risks to health and ensure that the machinery is safe to use, and that safe working practices are set up and followed. The employer needs to provide adequate first aid facilities and tell you about any potential hazards from the work you do and give you information, instructions, training and supervision as needed. Emergency plans need to be set up in case of emergency. Make sure that ventilation, temperature, lighting, and toilet, washing and rest facilities all meet health, safety and welfare requirements. Check that the right work equipment is provided and is properly used and regularly maintained. Ensure that the right warning signs are provided and looked after.Report certain accidents, injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences to either the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or the local authority, depending on the type of business. Explain what is meant by a ‘competent person’ in your workplace A competent person is someone who has sufficient training and experience or knowledge and other qualities that allow them to assist members properly. A Little Kindness Goes A Long Way Have you ever thought about what happens when people are kind, or how it feels to be filled with benevolence to other human beings? Recently I have found myself being very kind to other people and having concern for their feelings. Time flies by too fast to be hateful or rude to other people. We as humans often underestimate the power of kindness and caring, and don’t take into consideration of other peoples feelings. A simple smile or an honest compliment can change somebody's life.One example of showing kindness or curiosity for somebody elses feelings happened to me at the Country Market, the store i work at. It was about 8:00 p. m. on a tuesday night when I had just finished for the day and was coming home from school and the gym. I stopped at Country Market, and I went inside to get a drink and pay for my gas. The lines for the cash registers were filled on both sides with about 10 customers waiting at each. I was third in line, behind a middle aged man in his 40’s, and finally an elderly man in front of the line was checking out.The elderly man was in his upper 70’s, and he had a handful of groceries. The cashier asked the man if he needed help out, he replied â€Å"No thank you I can take this out myself†. The old man was struggling to get his groceries, and I noticed the middle aged man was hesitating to help him, so I set my drinks down and went up to the counter and grabbed his groceries and took them out. Little did I know when I was carrying out the mans groceries the middle aged man saw my act of kindness, and he paid for my drinks and my forty six dollars in gas.Another example of ways to show kindness and how it can impact other people's lives is just by smiling. The power of smiling is amazing, and it takes little or no effort and does not cost you anything. There is a website called To Write Love On Her Arms. TWLOHA is an anti-suicide non profit organization that aims at random acts of kindness or speaking out to those in need. They have a forum on their website about smiling and there has been a handful of cases where teenagers were thinking about committing suicide or feeling so down that they did not wanna live.These teenagers told their stories on this website and there were two that I read that was very sad. This girl said that she was going to kill herself, and the only reason that she did not is because a random old man opened a door for her at school and said â€Å"Smile it looks beautiful on you†. Now this young woman works for TWLOHA and is helping other people with their problems. Other examples of kind acts giving good karma is a story of an old man that works out at my gym with me by the name Jason Overstreet.Jason told me that he was in the drive through for Taco Bell when he decided to pay for the vehicle behind him. He said â€Å"he felt like a million bucks the rest of the day†. A week or so went on when Jason decided to go back t hrough Taco Bell again when he went to get his food from the drive through window. The girl that was working the window recognized him, and told him â€Å"It was really an amazing thing you started the other day. While you bought that lady’s lunch then she bought the car behind hers.It was like a chain reaction that lasted about 7 cars†. Jason was astonished at what he had started just by one simple act of kindness. Anyone can give random kindness anytime of the day. All they have to do is share a bit of their lives with others, or make a simple smile. When you are kind, you bring joy and happiness into the lives of others, and you will also be happier, too. Share your happiness with others, because happiness and kindness make the world go around. You never know when you can change someone's life with a simple smile.

Get The â€Å"Good† Quote Reporters often talk about getting a â€Å"good† quote from a speaker, but what do they mean? Generally, a good quote is when someone says something interesting, and says it in an interesting way. So be sure to take down plenty of direct quotes in your notebook so youll have plenty to choose from when you write your story. Forget Chronology Don’t worry about the chronology of the speech. If the most interesting thing the speaker says comes at the end of his speech, make that your lede. Likewise, if the most boring stuff comes at the start of the speech, put that at the bottom of your story – or leave it out entirely. Get The Audience Reaction After the speech ends, always interview a few audience members to get their reaction. This can sometimes be the most interesting part of your story. Watch For The Unexpected Speeches are generally planned events, but it’s the unexpected turn of events that can make them really interesting. For instance, does the speaker say something especially surprising or provocative? Does the audience have a strong reaction to something the speaker says? Does an argument ensue between the speaker and an audience member? Watch for such unplanned, unscripted moments – they can make an otherwise routine story interesting. Get a Crowd Estimate Every speech story should include a general estimate of how many people are in the audience. You don’t need an exact number, but there’s a big difference between an audience of 50 and one of 500. Also, try to describe the general makeup of the audience. Are they college students? Senior citizens? Business people?
